To be successful in this course you need the following:
Computer or Tablet or Mobile Device: This course is entirely online and thus you will need a device to access the course. You can use nearly any relatively modern computer that is running currently supported versions Windows, Mac OS, Linux, iOS, iPadOS, or Android.
Modern Web Browser: We suggest using the latest version of Chrome, Firefox, Safari, or Edge web browser for the best experience in this course. Other browsers may work but have not been tested.
High Speed Internet Connection: This is an Online Only Course which contains video, audio, text, images, PDF and a few other types of files. For the best experience we suggest an internet connection of at least 10 Mbps download speeds.
You can check your internet connection speed by visiting SpeedTest at https://speedtest.net Click the big GO button and your internet connection speed will be tested and you will be presented with the results.
A speed slower than 10 Mbps download will simply mean the media files in this course may take longer for you to download.
Headphones or Speakers: We strongly recommend a good pair of headphones to get the most out of this course. This course is focused on Learning Morse Code from an auditory perspective. As such every lesson contains some audio and/or video component. It is possible to use the built-in speakers in most computers, tables, and mobile devices, but either a good pair of headphones or external speakers are recommended for the best learning experience.
Quiet Place: We strongly recommend you have a quiet place to work through the materials in this course.
Morse Code Key or Iambic Paddles: This course is about learning Morse Code and to be successful you are going to need to practice using a Morse Code Key often referred to as a straight key, or set of Iambic Paddles. We suggest you begin with a low cost set of Iambic Paddles to get started.
For Iambic Paddles:
Electronic Keyer: If you are using Iambic Paddles, you will need some kind of an Electronic Keyer to generate the dits and dahs you make with your paddles. Most learners will simply connect their paddles to their HF Amateur Radio and use the built in electronic keyer in their radio. Check your radio’s owner’s manual to determine the correct cabling and settings needed to connect your iambic paddles to your radio.
For Straight Key:
Code Practice Oscillator: If you are using a straight key you will need some kind of a Code Practice Oscillator and the appropriate cables to connect your key to the Oscillator. Most operators will use their HF Amateur Radio and configure it according to the instructions in your radio’s user’s manual for use with a straight key. External Code Practice Oscillators are also available from third parties.
FREE Teachable iOS App (optional): If you plan to use your iPhone or iPad mobile device for this course, you will want to download and install the Teachable app. Teachable for iOS available for the App Store. Teachable does not currently offer a dedicated app for Android, but your built-in Chrome Browser on Android will work for completing this course.
